Whan That May — Lucas Blogs About The Canterbury Tales: Part 2

Image
Oh, you thought I would use a different picture for this month? The Intro Welcome back to Whan That Month — Lucas Blogs About The Canterbury Tales . As you might have guessed, this is my new monthly feature about my plan to read Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales  in a year or less. Last month I covered the General Prologue and The Knight's Tale. What's coming up this month? I'm glad you asked. I did not. Oh, Hypothetical Reader, I didn't think you'd want to involved yourself in something you've described as my " fascination with this medieval bullshit ." I don't. So this digression is a waste of time. Yup! This month we're covering what I like to call The Canterbury  Tales of Ribaldry  (Chaucer even says they both spoke of "harlotrye"! That's right, we're gettin' a little spicy this month, because immediately following The Knight's Tale, Chaucer segues into: The Miller'

Lucas Blogs About Frankenstein

Now Pictured: Me holding a copy of  Frankenstein  in front of my face. Somehow while looking for my grounded outlet adapter, I came across my copy of the book somewhere in my house. I don't regret my previous laziness. Not Pictured: Me holding a copy of Frankenstein  in front of my face. Somehow between finishing the book and getting ready to post this, I misplaced my copy of the book somewhere in my house. I'm too lazy to look for it. So, what's this book's de—OH! But seriously, Hypothetical Reader, do you wanna talk about Frankenstein ? You know I do! Then let's talk about Frankenstein ! Oh, and I don't think it's possible to SPOIL  a book that's been in print for over two hundred years. However, if you are operating under that misapprehension, consider this yo

Lucas Blogs About The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 12

OH! MY! GOD! The eyes of TJ Eckleburg represented Galactus this whole time! That's right, it's another one of those Hypothetical Reader-less blog posts. Let's just jump in:  Vol. 12 – To All the Squirrels I've Loved Before  collects the four final issues of Ryan North and Derek Charm's The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl  (colors by Rico Renzi, covers by Erica Henderson). I'm not gonna make any bones about it, this has been my favorite comic book of the last few years and I'm sad that I won't get to read any more of it. But let's talk about this collection before we get any farther. Doreen Green (aka the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) is looking for her friend Brian Drayne (secretly the reformed supervillain turned superhero Brain Drain — look he's a brain and eyes that are kept alive in a jar sitting on top of a robot body. Turns out that nobody's seen him for a few days, however, Doreen has been receiving a series of texts that appear to be p

Lucas Blogs About Unnatural Magic

It's magic! So,   what's this book's deal? Unnatural Magic  is C.M. Waggoner's debut novel. It's a fantasy story with mystery elements and strong bent towards social commentary. That sounds like a thing you'd be interested in . It is! What's it about? Well I'm not sure if I should start with describing the world or with a quick summary of how the plot kicks off. Let's start with the plot then you can delve into the setting more. Okay. You're being unusually helpful, Hypothetical Reader. Times are hard, we all have to help each other out. Fair enough. So, we start with Onna Gebowa. She's a merchant's daughter who shows a seemingly preternaturally facility for math which leads her parents to send her to the local school house. Turns out that Mr. Heisst's school teaches the children of well-to-do-ish families how to do magic. However, her career path is scuttled when her audition to attend the prestigious Welts
